During the years of 2007-2011, Dame Maggie Smith (Professor McGonagall) continued to film the final Harry Potter movies, all while battling Breast Cancer. During the filming of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Smith had shingles and was forced to wear a wig in order to continue filming.
On the subject, Smith said, “If there’s work to do I’ll do it. I’ve still got to stagger through the last Harry Potter. The cancer was hideous. It takes the wind out of your sails and I don’t know what the future holds, if anything. You feel so ghastly, you wouldn’t mind dying a lot of the time. The last couple of years have been a write-off, though I’m beginning to feel like a person now. My energy is coming back. I ought to pull myself together a bit.”
If anything, she’s a truly incredible and inspiring woman, and should be admired greatly.
Respect, Professor McGonagall.BIGGEST CRUSH

Monster Jam.
On Friday night, I received a call from one of my best friends, Emily who is also an RA at Stout. She invited me to go along with her, her boyfriend, her boyfriends friend, and her boyfriends dad to Monster Jam which is a monster truck rally at the Metrodome. At first I declined because I had already made plans to attend an ugly Christmas sweater party, but afterwards I was thinking how I really should go to Monster Jam, not only because I’ve wanted to see monster trucks for forever, but also because I have not been able to hang out with Emily hardly at all this semester. I called her back and let her know that I would love to go if they still had the ticket available and they did!
Skipping ahead to Saturday at noon, I headed over to Brandon’s house (Emily’s boyfriend), and met his friend, Joe, and his dad, Terry, and we got our stuff together to head out. The ride to the cities was a ton of fun, we were quoting the Hangover and Will Ferrell movies the entire way there, and we even saw a Santa holding an American Flag waving to people on a bridge. Once we got there, we walked around in the Pit before the show, it was absolutely amazing! All of the drivers were signing autographs and taking pictures, plus they had the USA and Canada four-wheeling racing teams there as well. Emily and I took so many pictures, it was an absolute blast. The Pit Pass went from 2-5 and then the show started. They first came out with these suped up mini trucks and raced those around the course, they shot shirts into the crowd, and the four-wheeling team raced as well. They also had a pyro dance team, which was kind of weird and awkward. But then, at 7:15, the real show started. Ohmygosh was it insane!!! They had two different sections, the racing and the freestyle. The freestyle was my favorite part, (along with probably everyone else) and all the trucks went over a ton of different jumps, and then they did donuts, it was so cool and completely exciting. What was really neat was that the guy who won the racing portion and the guy who won the freestyle portion, have been best friends since they were babies and were both around 22 years old. The guy who won the racing part, oh my, he was a cutie! I joked with my friends that he could be my Christmas present. But how I love monster trucks. I love big, jacked up trucks to start with, and then you add in all the bells and whistles that monster trucks have? oooooweee! I love it. :) And Emily and I had a blast hanging out, it was wonderful being able to spend time with her again! :)

Fillers and Latin
Today while we were in Intro. to Tech. Comm. and were looking through the various portfolios, I noticed one that had the typical Latin word filler, you know, “Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet…” It piked my curiosity, and so I went to the ole faithful Google to determine what it meant and the reason for choosing this Latin phrasing to fill templates. I came across the website, The Straight Dope, which had an article on the phrasing. Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet actually comes from the phrase, “Neque porro quisquam est qui dolorem ipsum quia dolor sit amet, consectetur, adipisci velit…” Which means, “There is no one who loves pain itself, who seeks after it and wants to have it, simply because it is pain….” After reading this and trying to correctly pronounce the passage, I determined that I want to learn Latin. Difficult, beautiful, and becoming a lost language, Latin is the foundation of many languages and gives the scientific terms a few of us know. I hope to learn some of this beautiful language soon; cheers to adding another item to my bucket list.
It’s that time of the semester.
